ABSTRACT:<\/b> The French anthropologist Marcel MAUS had defined the concept of \u201cBody Techniques\u201d as the ways in which from society-to-society people know how to use their bodies.\u00a0 It involves cultures and traditions developed by Man in relation with its social environment. Martial arts as an indispensable part of human culture, embody the way people understand and use their bodies. They are a set of cultural practices developed by humans for adaptations\u2019 needs. African people throughout history, have developed their own patterns of \u201cBody Techniques\u201d slanted towards the \u201cphysical\u201d, the \u201cspiritual\u201d and the \u201cartistic\u201d. Then, through cultural refinement, this has lay down the core philosophy of African Martial Arts with \u201cCombat\u201d, \u201cSpirituality\u201d and \u201cDance\u201d as intrinsic values.\u00a0 Borrowing MAUSS\u2019 definition of \u201cBody Techniques\u201d, the concept \u201cAfrican Martial Arts\u201d will refer to \u201ca cultural complex of body techniques associated with fighting (Attack\/Defense) created by African people in response to their adaptation and development needs over the course of history.\u201d This article uses Marcel MAUSS\u2019 anthropological conception of \u201cBody Techniques\u201d as theoretical foundation, and explores the African conception of \u201cBody Techniques\u201d in the context of African Martial Arts.<\/span><\/p>
